Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor

Foto eines Saugrohrdrucksensoren

The MAP sensor detects the absolute pressure in the intake manifold behind the throttle. The total intake air mass can be calculated together with the signal of the RPM sensor and the intake manifold temperature. The manifold absolute pressure serves as a foundation for mixture preparation and ignition control. Sensors have either three or four terminals:

  • Ground
  • Output; 0 to 4.5 volts
  • Supply voltage, usually 5.0 Volts
  • Optional: Temperature measurement (NTC)

Measuring the air temperature with the NTC, allows the calculation of the air density. This way the engine control unit can calculate the air mass.

Effects of sensor failure:

  • Engine check light turns ON
  • Misfire during acceleration
  • Power loss
  • Higher fuel consumption
